When it comes to natural skin care products, separating marketing claims from science is a challenge. Here’s a primer.

Pomegranates. Green tea. Mushrooms. They taste great, and scientific studies have shown that they may have powerful health benefits as foods. Now, many cosmetics companies are touting these same ingredients in their natural skin care products.

But drinking green tea is one thing, putting it on your skin another. Do these botanically based potions, often labeled "natural," "green," or "organic," live up to the hype?

“The marketing is still ahead of the science for the most part, but there is enough published work to convince me that the antioxidant botanicals will be the next big thing in skin care," says Richard Baxter, MD, faculty member at the University of Washington School of Medicine and chief medical officer of Calidora Skin Clinics.

Leslie S. Baumann, MD, an expert in the area of cosmetic ingredients, agrees that there is little proof behind most marketing claims for natural skin care products. She is the director of cosmetic dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, the first university-run cosmetic research center in the United States. If you want to try natural skin care products, Baumann recommends zeroing in on a specific concern and match the ingredient to it. Here are some botanicals she suggests:
Argan oil, derived from the fruit of a tree that grows in Morocco, has been dubbed “liquid gold.” The vitamin E-rich oil can be found in a Kiehl's body lotion. Baumann says Argan oil may improve skin ailments such as eczema, psoriasis, wrinkles, and dry skin. She also recommends olive, safflower, walnut, avocado, and evening primrose oils for dry skin.
Soy can help prevent pigmentation, Baumann says. “Active soy” in Aveeno Positively Radiant and Neutrogena products has been altered in the laboratory for greater effectiveness. Licorice, mulberry, and burberry extracts, along with Vitamin C from citrus fruits -- grapefruit, lime, lemon, and orange -- can also fade brown spots, Baumann says. Look for products from L’Oreal, La Roche Posay, and Skinceuticals.
Maitake mushrooms, found in Origins’ Plantidote, may help people with sensitive skin who suffer from rosacea and redness, she says. Chamomile, oatmeal, aloe vera, licorice, and cucumber extracts all have soothing properties; check out Jurlique products. Feverfew, a member of the sunflower family, also has calming properties. It’s an ingredient in Aveeno’s Ultra-Calming line.
Rhodiola (or rhodeola), known as golden root, is native to the high Himalayas. In a recent study of people with sensitive skin, those treated with rhodiola extract reported improved skin sensation and less skin dryness. Origins' Youthtopia skin-firming lotion contains extracts.
CoffeeBerry is harvested from the coffee cherry, the outer, fleshy casing of the coffee bean. It is said to possess antioxidant activity greater than pomegranates, berries, and green teas. In studies sponsored by Stiefel Laboratories, which owns the proprietory name, CoffeeBerry treatment improved the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and pigmentation. Look for the Revaleskin brand.
Resveratrol, a polyphenol from wine and grape skins, serves as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Animal studies suggest that resveratrol applied to the skin may help protect against harmful UV damage. The Caudalie line contains resveratrol.
Green tea is rich in antioxidants, especially one that may curb UV skin damage, some studies have shown. Pomegranate products may also help protect against UV skin damage, according to other research.
White tea is unfermented and uncured; only the young tips are used.Origins has a line called A Perfect World featuring white tea. In an industry-sponsored study, white tea extract was also shown to limit sunlight-incurred damage in human skin.

DURBAN (Reuters) - Carles Puyol finally cracked open Germany's stubborn defense with a superb late header on Wednesday to give Spain a deserved 1-0 win and send the European champions into their first World Cup final.

Puyol headed home Xavi's 73rd-minute corner after a Spanish onslaught to break a frustrating tactical deadlock and set up a final with Netherlands on Sunday at Soccer City in Johannesburg when new world champions will be crowned.

"Our players from defense to attack were extraordinary and we played a great game," Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said after his side had created the majority of the chances.

"We have another game to play, let's see if we are capable of being comfortable on the ball, in good physical shape and see if we can win. Holland represent the values of Dutch football very well and they'll be very tough rivals," he said.

The result was a repeat of Spain's 1-0 win over the Germans in the 2008 European Championship final and was thoroughly merited, with the Spaniards relentless in pursuit of a goal while Germany struggled to rattle the opposing defense.

Spain started brightly in both halves and always looked threatening against a nervous German defense, with the pacy Pedro's inclusion instead of misfiring striker Fernando Torres paying off from the outset thanks to his dangerous forays.

Pedro played a pivotal role in most of Spain's attacks, linking up well with Andres Iniesta, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso against a Germany side under pressure and showing only brief glimmers of their counter-attacking flair.

PATIENT SPAIN

Germany tested Spain's patience with steadfast, albeit at times desperate, defending to shut out the final ball and keep menacing marksman David Villa at bay.

The Spaniards came agonizingly close in the 58th minute with a Pedro shot that forced a spectacular save from Manuel Neuer before Iniesta cut the ball across the face of goal just a meter ahead of the sliding Villa.

Germany remained on the back foot and 17 minutes from time were punished when Puyol charged into the area to head home the winner and leave Spain to soak up some late pressure before deservedly reaching the final.

Three-times champions Germany were a shadow of the side that trounced England and Argentina on their way to the last four but still looked dangerous in their few ventures toward goal, with Piotr Trochowski squandering a chance to score after 67 minutes.

Germany coach Joachim Loew said they lacked their usual edge and tipped Spain to beat Netherlands in the final.

"Of course, we are disappointed as you would be when you lose a semi-final," Loew told a news conference.

"I have to congratulate the Spanish team. Over the past two years they have been the most skilled team of all and they showed that. We weren't good enough tonight."

Villa, tournament joint top scorer with five of Spain's seven goals, praised his team and said reaching the final had been their only goal since winning the European Championship.

"Never in the history of our country has this happened. We have a group who deserve it all," he said.

"We're very happy to be in the final, that was our objective, but now we want to be champions."

'I Hate Luv Storys' doing better than expected: Imran

Romantic comedy 'I Hate Luv Storys' has collected approximately Rs.21.5 crore in the domestic circuit in the first three days of its release and hero Imran Khan says he is surprised by the "grand opening" it has got.

"I feel honestly very surprised with the numbers. I had told (director) Punit Malhotra that it's a very good film and I was quite confident with the way it was promoted, but I didn't expect such a opening," Imran told us over the telephone.

'I Hate Luv Storys' is a rom-com where Imran plays a bit of a womaniser and also stars Sonam Kapoor.

Asked if he thought it was wise to release the film after 'Kites' and 'Raavan', he said: "I think everything went in our favour. There are the things you can't plan for and everything happened by good fortune."

Imran has signed a film with producer-director Karan Johar and it was rumoured that he would be romancing Kareena Kapoor in the movie.

"See, I have signed another film with Karan, but until he announces it I can't talk anything about it," Imran said.

Imran is also wrapping up director Kunal Kohli's 'Break Ke Baad', in which he will be seen opposite Deepika Padukone.

"It's a romantic and coming of age film. It's of a multiple genre," the young actor said, unwilling to disclose anything more about the film.

Speculation was also rife that Imran may tie the knot with his girlfriend Avantika Malik in January 2011, but he denied it, saying that he would be shooting during that period.

"Actually in January, I will be shooting for Karan's film," he said.

Ranbir Kapoor finally throws his first party

It looks like childhood friend and director Siddharth Anand can make Ranbir Kapoor do things which no one else can. He made Ranbir throw a party and that too at his bungalow in Pali Hill where not many guests are allowed.

Ranbir hosted a wrap-up party for the cast and crew of his new film 'Anjaana-Anjaani' where everyone, including co-star Priyanka Chopra and American actors flown into Mumbai to shoot a club song, had a blast.

One of the guests said: "Ranbir's mom had looked into every detail. The food was Punjabi, home cooked and yummy. Ranbir's dad Rishi Kapoor had crashed by the time the party started.

"Chintu uncle's sleeping habits are invariable. Even when he has his own dinner guests at home, he starts getting restless after 9.30 p.m. and begins to switch off lights and air conditioners as hints for the guests to leave. We expected him to wake up from all the noise we made and come up any moment to switch off the music."

'Anjaana Anjaani' producer Sajid Nadiadwala could not make it to the party as he's recovering from his illness and holidaying in Europe.

The source said: "It didn't make sense to wait for Sajid to return. A wrap-up party has to happen immediately after the last day of shooting or not at all."

When asked how Ranbir, known to be anti-party, was persuaded to host a party in his home, Siddharth said: "Oh, I think I can make Ranbir do things no one else can. While we were shooting for 'Anjaana Anjaani' in the US, I made him gift me an expensive watch. Ranbir, my wife and I are teetotallers and full-on foodies. We went through as many restaurants in the US as possible."

"The wrap-up party Saturday would have been Ranbir's second party. I had persuaded him to host one after the completion of our first movie together 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'. But we got late completing the last shots of the title song in 'Bachna...', so all the food was sent by Neetu aunty to Yashraj Studios.

"This time we made it to Ranbir's home after the song. And yes, it was Ranbir's first party. We had a ball Saturday night," Siddharth said.
